Richard Wills’ fascination with horses is hereditary. His father was an accomplished horseman whose skill was put to the extreme test when he served as a mounted soldier in the Royal Hussars, in the 1914-1918 Great War.
This inherent sensitivity combined with the artist’s fascination for shape and movement has given him a unique ability to capture some of the rare spirit that has for thousands of years bonded man with this beast.
There is a sense of immense energy captured in his work, which is further exaggerated by the stylised way in which this noble animal is portrayed. A combination of powerful brush strokes and an unusual watercolour technique has produced images that seem to be fighting with their two dimensional constraints.
